We understand that being academically dismissed from IU Bloomington can be a difficult, painful, and sometimes life-altering experience. If you’ve been able to turn things around after taking some time away and are ready to return to complete your IUB degree, you may be able to petition for reinstatement through the Center for Students in Transition (SIT).
If you are an international student your first step is to check in with the IUB Office of International Services.
Generally speaking, the most common path to reinstatement into the Center for Students in Transition is to complete at least 9 credits in the same semester (usually Fall or Spring) at another college or university with a minimum 2.5 GPA, no grades below a solid C, and no Withdrawals (W). These are minimum guidelines, and stronger grades can lead to a more successful petition. Please note that a Reinstatement Committee reviews petitions and approval is not guaranteed. In some cases a degree or major change will be required before reinstatement is approved.
Be specific in your responses to the questions in the reinstatement petition. For example, consider the feasibility and practicality of the degree/major you're considering. Does the degree have competitive or selective admission? Do the admission GPA and other admission requirements seem reasonably attainable for you? (If time to graduation is a factor for you then you could consider that as well, though it’s not something the committee will take into consideration.)
It’s best to keep your entire word count to around 500 or 600 words, though that’s not a hard and fast rule. Take the essay seriously, including revising for coherence and professionalism, as well as editing for grammar and typos.
Before petitioning for reinstatement through the Center for Students in Transition:
- Review the brief but important information about SIT Academic Dismissal and Academic Standards.
- Complete the SIT Student Referral Form, after which a Students in Transition advisor will then get in touch with you to talk things over.
IU Bloomington's Fresh Start policy may be an option to consider if you’ve been away from all Indiana University campuses for 36 months or more. If you're under academic dismissal and qualify for Fresh Start you'll need to first successfully petition for reinstatement as described above. In that situation there will be an opportunity for you to talk things over with a Center for Students in Transition advisor as you consider your options.
We wish you well!
